Venice Beach is a diverse community with an excellent mix of homes, condominiums, and lofts. Many original early 20th century homes give Venice the feel of a quiet beach town; however, due to the beachside location and popularity of the area many older homes are being renovated to maintain their craftsman aesthetic and increasingly several innovative and sustainably built architectural homes dot the landscape. Homes in the Venice Canals Historic District, Venice walk-street homes, oceanfront Boardwalk properties, and older homes ripe for redevelopment are particularly sought after.
What began as a seaside resort in 1905 is now a community known for its eclectic Boardwalk, laidback beach lifestyle, and an eye toward the future due to the influence of technology firms. Abbot Kinney, the tobacco millionaire, had a vision to develop the “Venice of America”. He dug canals to drain the marshland in Venice Beach and his bold vision proved to be hugely successful. Kinney’s Venice Beach resort was a hit and it grew rapidly, as such the rise in popularity of homes in Venice were inextricably linked to Kinney’s success.
Venice Beach has been through many changes but continues to attract artists, poets, writers, and musicians. Architecture has also proved integral to Venice’s history since the early years. Frank Gehry designed several well-known properties in the area including the studio once owned by Dennis Hopper and the iconic Binoculars Building on Main Street that was home to Chiat/Day. Architects Thom Mayne and Eric Owen Moss also made their marks on Venice. Charles and Ray Eames had their offices on Abbot Kinney Boulevard from 1943 forward.
Venice is probably best known for its famous Venice Boardwalk, a vibrant beachside two mile promenade full of shops and cafes populated by street performers and fortune tellers. Muscle Beach, the basketball courts, handball and paddleball courts, a skate park, and the beach volleyball courts all contribute to the energy of the Venice Boardwalk.
The street that bears the founder Abbot Kinney’s name is now a popular destination full of trendy restaurants and creative boutiques. First Fridays along Abbot Kinney Boulevard attracts large crowds to browse the local art and sample offerings from food trucks converging in the area. The Venice Farmers’ Market is held each Friday morning between 7:00 and 11:00 A.M.
